On November 12, 2010, Mrs. Miller’s 8^th-Grade Green Team social studies classes from Berner Middle School participated in a program sponsored by The History Channel titled “Take a Vet to School Day.”  Each year, veterans are invited from students’ families, the Massapequa community and the local American Legion Post 1066 and Knights of Columbus to participate as students continue their exploration and commemoration of Veterans Day as a national holiday, not just another day off from school.  The veterans in participation sit in small groups with students and share their experiences in the service, as well as any pictures or other memorabilia they have.  Students also share projects they have completed on the history of Veterans Day, biographies of family veterans, and visits to Massapequa war memorials.  The History Channel also provides a variety of materials for the program, including a “Take a Vet to School” t-shirt for all veterans who attend.
